ELVA - Side/Coffee table
The Partnership with plastic flux and Humber's bachelor of industrial design program aims to exploit a new eco-friendly material. Elva is created as a way of displaying the possibilities of plastic flux, now making its way into residential furniture. Elva takes advantage of its texture creating a brutalist look to elevate its look, playing with negative space and tall straight shapes, these side and coffee tables are very versatile to the point where they can be arranged together or separated and still enhance and adapt to any space.

First concept sketches
Two proposals were made for a residential furniture piece exclusively made out of Plastic flux. The first concept was a modular shelf concept, which could be used at the home entry or living room. The second concept was a two level side table, which main attractive was its open concept; both concepts were intended to play with the different tones the Plastic Flux material offers.

Sketch models
For both concepts a fast sketch model was made out of pink foam and illustration board. This had the main purpose to illustrate and highlight the main elements. Also this helped to see how complicated the building of each model would be, in this case the shelf concept seemed more of a challenge to build due to the material limitations.

Sketch models 1:1 scale
After deciding and refining the design direction, the side table was chosen, and developed as a two piece family, that worked both as a side and coffee table. As part of the development, 1:1 scale pink foam models were made to refine proportions and measurements of both tables, along with the ergonomics. After getting these measurements, a wood model was produced to get a more real feeling of building the final model.

Dimensioning & 3D model

Previous to building the final model, we planned out and figure out the dimensions (in) of both pieces. Making the technical drawings, parallel to having made the 3D model in SolidWorks, to visualize the joinery and materials.

Final model
Building the final model was a learning curve due to the nature of the material Plastic Flux. Making pink foam templates to make sure we could use most of the material. The final model presents as a brutalist and elevated furniture piece, which is adaptable to any space the user decides and even the arrangement of the pieces, allowing the user to connect and interact further with the product.
